At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Waikato Stud's deceased multiple champion sire O'Reilly (Last Tycoon-Courtza, by Pompeii Court) added a black-type success when exciting 3YO Australian-bred colt Brutal (O’Reilly-Alberton Princess, by Golan) dug deep and showed his fighting qualities when opening his stakes account in the $120,000 Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) for 3YO colts & geldings. From the Gr3-placed mare Alberton Princess, Brutal is a full-brother to Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) winner Talaria and was purchased by Hawkes Racing for $220,000 at the 2017 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale from the draft of Mapperley Stud. He extended his unbeaten record to 2 wins from 2 starts for $128,000. Team Hawkes are yet to lock in Brutal’s primary spring target, but have identified the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) as suitable options. “When they're $1.50 everyone expects them to win by five lengths. You don't have to win by big margins, you only have to get the job done,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told racing.com. “This is only his second race start and it's all new to him. We'll have to go back, take stock and watch the replay because we really had no plan after today.” Brutal is now $9 favourite for the $2 million Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on 13 October.
