Oh Susanna South African Horse Of The Year
In South Africa overnight, Australian-bred 4YO mare Oh Susanna was crowned Equus Horse of the Year, a feat not achieved since the mighty Igugu during the 2010/2011 racing season. The Drakenstein Stud-bred and raced Oh Susanna looked to have the title at her mercy, after her recent crowning as Cape Horse of the Year at the Cape Breeding Awards. The Justin Snaith Racing-trained mare won three Gr1 races during her 3YO season including the Paddock Stakes and Sun Met during the Cape Summer season and the Woolavington 2000 during the Durban season, clearly highlighting herself as the best of her generation. Foaled at Coolmore Stud in Australia, the daughter of Darley’s Champion Sire Street Cry (IRE) was also nominated in the categories of Champion Middle Distance and Champion 3YO Filly, both of which she also won. Oh Susanna was not the only Australian-bred category winner at the glittering black tie function at the Emperor’s Palace on Tuesday evening, with the Shadwell Stud-bred and raced Soqrat crowned Champion 2YO Colt/Gelding. Beaten only once from four starts, Mick de Kock’s last start Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes (1600m) winner is the first elite level winner for Darley’s Gr1 Golden Rose winner Epaulette (Commands).
