Champion Stakes Defence Likely For Cracksman

Friday, 10th August 2018

Despite disappointing his many fans when beaten by Gr1 Cox Plate entrant Poet’s Word in the Gr1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, Frankel’s Cracksman has been nominated for the £1.3 million Gr1 Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot, a race he won last year. According to racing.co.uk, the boom galloper was one of 49 horses entered for the centrepiece on Qipco Champions Day, to be held on 20 October. Cracksman smashed his rivals by 7-lengths in 2017’s renewal, with owner-breeder Anthony Oppenheimer saying the horse was “absolutely in his element last year”, and that, “There’s no question the race will be considered [this year].” Although the Gr1 Juddmonte Stakes at York in 12 days time is a possibility for Cracksman’s return, harder tracks resulting from the UK’s high temperatures might delay proceedings. Oppenheimer also revealed that Cracksman, who is being aimed at the Gr1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as well, could run in both races.
