Impressive Winner for Toronado

Thursday, 2nd August 2018

Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado sired an impressive winner on day one of Glorious Goodwood when his 2YO son Watan (Toronado-Shotgun Gulch, by Thunder Gulch) scored an easy 2 length win in a valuable maiden stakes over 1200 metres. Trained by Richard Hannon on behalf of Sheikh Joaan's Al Shaqab Racing, Watan travelled smoothly for Ryan Moore and, despite some signs of greenness, let down with a smart turn of foot late to become the fifth winner for his exciting young sire. "This is a great victory as he is by Toronado, who was owned by Al Shaqab, and was bred at Sheikh Joaan's Haras de Bouquetot, so it's a very special winner to have," Hannon told Racing Post. "I thought Watan would run well, but I didn't really think he would win like that." Hannon added: "He's always shown a fair bit, but he had sore shins so we had to wait with him. As time went on, I thought we would target him for Goodwood and it worked well. I think he could get a mile in time and he is fully decent. Hopefully he's a good one as Sheikh Joaan is due a good one." A triple Gr1 winner and European Champion 3YO Miler, Toronado (High Chaparral-Wana Doo, by Grand Slam) stands at Al Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot in Normandy, France at a fee of €12,000 (live foal). His Swettenham Stud fee is $20,000 (plus GST).
