Blood Horse has reported overnight that Triple Crown winner Justify has been retired from racing due to injury. Raced by WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, and Starlight Racing, Justify (Scat Daddy-Stage Magic, by Ghostzapper) became the 13th horse in history to claim North American racing's coveted Triple Crown when winning the Group 1 Belmont Stakes (12 furlongs) at Belmont Park in New York last month. Justify will return to WinStar Farm early next month where he will begin preparations for next year's northern hemisphere breeding season. "Justify had some filling in his ankle, and he is just not responding quick enough for a fall campaign," said trainer Bob Baffert. "We all wanted to see Justify run again, but ultimately it is my responsibility to make sure he is perfect. Without 60-90 days, I can't be definite." WinStar Farm president Elliott Walden commented: "The timing is bad for another start in 2018, and therefore, we have to retire him. Like American Pharoah, we can't take the risk of running Justify as a 4-year-old. We all wanted him to finish his career in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but it was not meant to be." Justify retires unbeaten with 6 wins (including the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, Gr1 Preakness Stakes & Gr1 Santa Anita Derby) from 6 starts and US$3,798,000 in earnings.
