Top Colt Out of Derby

Wednesday, 7th February 2018

Talented Kiwi colt Demonetization (All Too Hard-Midnight Special, by Zabeel) has been ruled out of next month's New Zealand Derby due to injury, reports NZ Racing Desk. Demonetization, a winner of three of his four starts including the Gr2 Auckland Guineas (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year's Day, was second favourite behind Scott Base for the Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on 3 March. He will now miss the remainder of his classic season. "We sent the horse down to Matamata and scintigraphy tests showed a hot spot in his fetlock. We had him x-rayed yesterday [Monday], you have to wait two or three days to do that, and it showed a stress fracture," trainer Nigel Tiley said. "He'll have box rest for two or three weeks and then a couple of months off to let everything settle down. That's racing and it happens, but we've still got the horse and we'll look forward to his four-year-old season."
