Winx 5th in Trial

Tuesday, 6th February 2018

Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) has pleased trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman after finishing fifth in her trial at Rosehill yesterday. The champion mare looked in top order when cruising around in the opening 1000m heat of the day behind Australia's best sprinter Redzel. "She seemed a little more alert this morning," Bowman told racingnsw.com.au. "I think she just knows it's not the day to be really attacking the other horses. I was doing enough to make sure she stayed in touch. I'm sure if I'd have laid into her she would have responded." Bowman added: "Having been through the process so often now, I'm satisfied come game day she will be right to go." Waller was also more than happy with the hit-out. "Fortunately she's a pretty straightforward horse to train," he said. "I go with common sense. The horse comes first, find the races second and hopefully she can continue on this winning dream we are currently experiencing." Waller remains optimistic that the suspended Bowman - who is currently set to miss the ride on Winx when she resumes as expected in the Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday week (17 February) - will have his sentence reduced on appeal. "We will have a look after today with Hugh Bowman's appeal. I'll put some names forward, I'll obviously speak to Hugh Bowman but hopefully we don't have to worry about that," he said.
