Sprint Features For Kiwi Colt

Tuesday, 31st January 2017

New Zealand Derby plans for Heroic Valour have been abandoned with the classy colt set to be aimed at a trans-Tasman Gr1 sprint double, reports theinformant.co.nz. Following his brave second to unbeaten Kiwi filly Volpe Veloce in Sunday's Karaka Mile at Ellerslie, Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis confirmed the 3YO would be prepared for a tilt at the Gr1 NRM Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on 11 February, before a possible trip to Brisbane for the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in the winter. "After talking it over with our stable rider Opie Bosson, we've decided to bring him back in distance rather than going down the Derby path," Ellis said. "There's no doubting his class. It will all depend on the progress he makes over the next week, but the 1400 metres of the NRM Sprint should suit him." Ellis added: "The plan beyond that is to spell him and then aim him at the Stradbroke in Brisbane in June." Heroic Valour, a Fastnet Rock half-brother to Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour, is a winner of last season's Gr1 Diamond Stakes.
