Weir Unveils Handsome Winner

Monday, 30th January 2017

Darren Weir is predicting a bright future for northern hemisphere-bred entire Handsome Thief after the 4YO posted a fetching debut win at Moonee Valley on Friday night. Raced by Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds, the Irish-bred entire lived right up to his pedigree when unleashing a brilliant turn of foot to score an easy 3.75 length win in the William Hill Plate over 1200 metres. "He's always trialled up well at home but he's taken a long time to get there," Weir told Racing.com. "As [usual] with the Waratah Thoroughbred horses, they give them all the time in the world to get them right." Weir added: "Hopefully this one can go on with the job, get over a bit further and win a better race." Handsome Thief is by Shamardal out of the Galileo mare Insoumise, a half-sister to Gr1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud winner Plumania. This is a prolific Gr1-producing family that also includes unbeaten Gr1 Australasian Oaks winner Abbey Marie, Indian Rose, Kinshasa No Kiseki, and successful sire Groom Dancer.
