At Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, Widden Stud's Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning stallion Stratum (Redoutes Choice-Bourgeois, by Luskin Star) added a black-type success when 6YO gelding Divine Calling (Stratum-Rubicall, by Rubiton) scored a surprise first-up length win for trainer Fred Kersley in the $100,000 Listed Scenic Blast Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Durendal (Medaglia d'Oro-Razor Blade, by Blazing Sword) & 6YO entire Potent Secret (Secret Remedy-Simmo's Speedstar, by Land Speed Record). This was a surprising first-up win for Divine Calling who had previously been trained by Gai Waterhouse to run second in a Caulfield Guineas, before embarking on a career in Hong Kong that yielded another Gr1 placing in the Hong Kong Classic Mile. having his first start for master WA trainer Fred Kersley, Divine Calling improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Stutt Stakes) and 7 placings (including the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas & Gr1 Hong Kong Classic Mile) from 22 starts for $1,243,876 earnings.
