Australian-Bred Whisky Baron Wins Gr1 The Sun Met
At Kenilworth racecourse in South Africa on Saturday, Arrowfield Stud's beautifully bred Gr1-winning stallion Manhattan Rain (Encosta de Lago- Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) sired his first Gr1 winner when 4YO Australian-bred entire Whisky Baron (Manhattan Rain-Tazkara, by Sinndar) when scoring by 1.5 lengths for trainer Brett Crawford in the R5 million Gr1 Sun Met (2000m) for 3YO+, over 5YO entire Legal Eagle (Greys Inn-Young Sensation, by National Emblem) & 6YO gelding Captain America (Captain Al-Requista, by Fort Wood). A $50,000 purchase at the 2104 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud, Whisky Baron improved his record to 6 wins (including the Gr2 Peninsula Handicap) and 6 placings from 13 starts for R3,446,375 earnings. Trainer Brett Crawford commented: "It all kind of started when we gelded him in July. He has just got better and better. I'm a firm believer that when a horse gets into winning ways, it gives them an edge and it's hard to beat them." Wining jockey Greg Cheyne added: "The stable and I were confident beforehand, as, although people said we had a soft prep, we knew what we had. He is the most uncomplicated horse I have ever dealt with!" By Manhattan Rain, an Encosta de Lago half-brother to multiple champion Australian sire and Arrowfield barn-mate Redoute's Choice, Whisky Baron is out of the unraced French mare Tazkara (Sinndar) making him a half-brother to the 5-time winning former Paul Messara-trained galloper Rowie.
