Protectionist In Action On Sunday
Protectionist will take the next step towards a possible Melbourne Cup start when he lines up in the Gr2 Grosser Hansa Preis (2400m) at Hamburg on Sunday. The 6YO looked like the Protectionist of old when resuming with an effortless 3.25-length win in the Commerzbank Cup over 2200 metres at Dusseldorf earlier this month. Following his 2014 Melbourne Cup victory, Protectionist failed to win another race under Kris Lees with connections putting his poor form down to a failure to adapt to Australian racing conditions. Australia's firm tracks were cited as the cause of bone bruising in all four fetlocks with the disease referring secondary pain across Protectionist's back and hindquarter causing him to lose his action when placed under pressure. Consequently the decision was made to send the talented galloper back to his former trainer Andreas Wohler in Germany in the hope of reviving his career. Managing part-owner Jamie Lovett of Australian Bloodstock has previously said that Protectionist could return to Australia for another tilt at the Melbourne Cup in the spring if he continues to improve and remains sound.
