Beholder Wins Gr1 Vanity Stakes
Champion US mare Beholder (Henny Hughes-Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek) collected the 10th top-flight victory of her incredible career when scoring an effortless win in the US$400,000 Gr1 Vanity Stakes (8 furlongs) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. The multiple Eclipse Award winner scored by 1.5-lengths over 4YO mares Stellar Wind (Curlin-Evening Star, by Malibu Moon) & Finest City (City Zip-Be Envied, by Lemon Drop Kid) to post her eighth consecutive win and boost her remarkable record to 17 wins (including the Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes, Gr1 Pacific Classic, Gr1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes, Gr1 Ogden Phipps Stakes, Gr1 Kentucky Oaks, Gr1 Santa Anita Oaks, Gr1 Santa Ynez Stakes, Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff & Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies) & 3 placings from 22 starts for US$4,736,600 earnings. "Just another great effort," said Richard Mandella, who trains the 6YO for B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm. "She continues to amaze us all. There was a time when we didn't think she'd go long. She seems to adjust to what we're doing. I'm lucky to experience something that very few people in history have - to have a great horse this long." Mandella added: "Good horses come along, and there are a few great ones, but to be great and stay great, it really is special." Owner B. Wayne Hughes said that Beholder would now be aimed at the Gr1 Pacific Classic against the males, with the Breeders' Cup Classic her primary end-of-year target.
