Street Smart Eyeing QLD Derby

Friday, 27th May 2016

Cambridge 3YO Street Smart will be on trial for a Queensland Derby start when he contests a benchmark 74 handicap over 2000 metres at Randwick tomorrow, reports NZ Racing Desk. "We think he's a good horse but whether the penny has dropped enough yet, we don't know," trainer Shaune Ritchie said. "We're relying on the very good record New Zealand staying three-year-olds have over here. He's on trial for the Queensland Derby but he'd probably need to win on Saturday to get there or else run a really unlucky second and hope that he's earned enough prize money to get in." Ritchie added: "I watched him gallop at Randwick today [Thursday] and he worked well. He's eating up well so he's settled in how we'd have liked." A last-start winner over 2100 metres at Pukekohe, Street Smart is by Melbourne Cup winner Shocking out of the Zabeel mare Charmeel meaning he should have little problem with the mile-and-half of the Derby. "He carried 59.5 kilos [at Pukekohe] and while he didn't beat a stellar field, he did it carrying a fair bit of weight on a slow track so we know he will stay," said Ritchie.
