Beholder At Peak Of Her Powers

Friday, 27th May 2016

Champion US mare Beholder (Henny Hughes-Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek) issued a warning to her future rivals that she is in top physical shape when clocking five furlongs in :59 2/5 at Santa Anita Park on Wednesday, reports Blood Horse. The multiple Eclipse Award winner will bid for the 10th Gr1 victory of her remarkable career when she contests the Vanity Stakes at Santa Anita on June 4. "We let her show off a little bit this morning, but nothing that would surprise us," said Richard Mandella, who trains the 6YO for B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm. "I would expect this to be one of her better performances - which it would need to be, because better horses intend to run. And that's pretty much how we've gone about our business of getting her ready." Mandella has previously said that the Breeders' Cup Classic is likely to be Beholder's primary end-of-year target, but that all options are open. "I would say anything is possible for her, but we take it a race at a time," Mandella said. "She's just a horse, and we're going to take it at her pace. But so far, that pace is moving right along." Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey added: "We've certainly learned we can't think too far ahead. There's so many good horses out there, and we've got respect for all of them, but they've got to have respect for her. There's a lot of really good fillies there in her own division, there's taking on colts again - all kinds of exciting options out there."
