Wings Of Desire Gallop Excites Gosden
John Gosden expressed his delight after watching leading English Derby contender Wings Of Desire (Pivotal-Gull Wing, by In the Wings) navigate the tricky Epsom course with aplomb on Tuesday morning, reports At the Races. "Frankie [jockey Frankie Dettori] was very happy with the horse. He hadn't started any form of action until March and I am thrilled with how he has come on mentally," said Gosden. "Frankie loved the way he came down the hill. He changed his legs down the straight and picked up when he wanted to." The Newmarket handler added: "He has learnt a lot. He has got a cool mind on him and I like the way he was business-like." Wings Of Desire, a full-brother to the classy Gr1 performer Eagle Top, laid down his classic credentials when running out a fetching winner two weeks ago of the Gr2 Dante Stakes (10.5 furlongs) at York, the traditional lead-up to the Derby which will be run at Epsom on Saturday week (4 June). Unraced as a 2YO, his Derby preparation has been far from orthodox, but Gosden, who knows a good horse when he sees one having trained numerous champions himself, believes Wings Of Desire could be a bit special. "I think it is unusual what he has done," continued Gosden. "Most have an education at two years old - they might have worked and not raced, but in his case he missed it all." He added: "From coming off a canter in March to winning a Dante is freakish." Wings Of Desire has won 2 of his 3 starts to date.
