The Gurkha Wins Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains

Monday, 16th May 2016

At Deauville in France, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) celebrated an elite success when 3YO colt The Gurkha (Galileo-Chintz, by Danehill Dancer) demolished his rivals when scoring by 5.5-lengths for trainer Aidan O'Brien in the Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (8 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts First Selection (Diktat-Villa Sonata, by Mozart) & Dicton (Lawman-Saying, by Giant's Causeway). The Gurkha, whose odds for next month's Epsom Derby were slashed to as little as 3-1 after his visually brilliant win, advanced his record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 3 starts. "We've always thought he was a nice horse and when he won at Navan (by 9 lengths) we thought he was real nice," trainer Aidan O'Brien told At The Races. 'He has three options now - the St James's Palace, the French Derby and the Epsom Derby. We'll let the dust settle for a week or 10 days and then we'll see."
