Cool Chap Earns Derby Shot

Wednesday, 11th May 2016

Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman says that promising young stayer Cool Chap has continued to improve ahead of Saturday's $500,000 Gr1 South Australia Derby (2500m) at Morphettville. An impressive last-start winner of the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington, Freedman, who trains in partnership with his brother Anthony, was initially inclined to send Cool Chap to the paddock but said his form demanded his inclusion in Saturday's feature. "We stick to a set formula with him," Freedman told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "He went straight down to Pinecliff for about a week after the St Leger; he loves it down there. And he came back, and he was very bright and happy." Freedman added: "His work leading up to the Derby has been as good as it was before the St Leger. He's such a good little staying horse and so honest - you've got to give him his crack at it." Formerly trained by Peter Moody, Cool Chap has now won 3 of his 7 starts for $214,450 earnings. Freedman said the son of High Chaparral would definitely be spelled after Saturday, with the Melbourne spring racing carnival his primary end-of-year target. "He's still a very-lightly raced horse, and still quite an immature horse," Freedman said. "He's also a Magic Millions horse. I'll discuss with the owners, but my way of thinking would be after the Derby to give him a good spell, start his campaign in the spring a bit later and pitch him towards the million-dollar race at the Gold Coast." Cool Chap is currently the TAB third favourite for the South Australian Derby at $6. The Mick Kent-trained Charlevoix is favourite for the race at $3.70.
