Nyquist Draws 13 For Kentucky Derby

Friday, 6th May 2016

Champion colt Nyquist (Uncle Mo-Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry) drew barrier 13 and was installed as the 3-1 favourite for Saturday's 142nd running of the US$2 million Gr1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, reports Blood Horse. "Breaking from 13 is fine," trainer Doug O'Neill said. "He was No. 13 when he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland. The post didn't matter to us a ton, but we're happy with the outside, for sure." Nyquist, who extended his unbeaten record to 7 wins from 7 starts when scoring a dominant 3.25-length win in the Gr1 Florida Derby (9 furlongs) last start, must overcome a recent history that is against champion juveniles. Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, is the only juvenile champion to win the opening leg of the Triple Crown. Of the other fancied runners, 8-1 second favourite Exaggerator drew post 11, while equal third favourites Creator, Gun Runner and Mohaymen came up with barriers 3, 5 and 14 respectively. "I'm fine with it," Exaggerator's trainer Keith Desormeaux said of the Gr1 Santa Anita Derby winner. "(Jockey) Kent (Desormeaux) seems a bit concerned, because he'll have to wait some after they load, but I don't see a problem. The horse is cool as a cucumber. It'll be fine." Shadwell-owned Mohaymen, who was undefeated until his fourth-placed effort behind Nyquist in the Florda Derby, is again drawn outside his rival for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "We're happy with it," McLaughlin said. "The last spot in the main gate, with a little bit of space between 14 and 15. There are lot worse post positions." Saturday's Run for the Roses will field a capacity field of 20 horses for the first leg of the US Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975. The field is:

  1. Trojan Nation (Patrick Gallagher) 50-1
