Zenyatta Son Makes Promising Debut
Ziconic, the latest progeny of former champion mare Zenyatta, ran a highly encouraging third when making his debut in a 1400 metre maiden special weight event at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, reports Blood Horse. The 2YO son of champion North American stallion Tapit was slow to jump from the gates and at one stage was more than 15 lengths from the leader before rallying and surging late to finish within 1.75-lengths of the winner Fast Munny. "I thought, 'Oh my goodness. Come on. I hope something changes,'" trainer John Shirreffs commented post-race. "He responded very well. You always have big expectations. You dream. With Zenyatta, we realized the dream. Now you dream about her foals. They bring part of that dream back." Jockey Gary Stevens commented: "We knew he was going to break slow and it took him a little while to get wound up." He added: "I never got to ride the big mare, Zenyatta, but I know what it felt like now...I've never been cheered for finishing third in a maiden special weight before." No decision has yet been made regarding Ziconic's next start.
