Weatherly Wins Listed Talindert Stakes
At Flemington in Melbourne, Arrowfield Stud's deceased Gr1-placed stallion Beneteau (Redoute's Choice-Slice Of Paradise, by Encosta de Lago) added a black-type success when exciting 2YO colt Weatherly (Beneteau-Luna Bella, by Stravinsky) scored a brilliant 1.3-length win for trainer Paul Messara in the $120,000 Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) for 2YOs, over 2YO filly Conscious (So You Think-Elimbari, by Fastnet Rock) & 2YO gelding Jackson (Not a Single Doubt-Elegant Angela, by Perugino). This was the first stakes victory for Weatherly who took his record to 1 win from 2 starts for $76,200 earnings. Paul Messara said that Weatherly reminded him of his sire and former smart 2YO Beneteau, who finished third behind Star Witness in the 2010 Gr1 Blue Diamond. "He showed a lot of class today," Paul Messara told racing.com. "He's pure speed this horse. He's pretty much untapped at the moment so its pretty exciting going forward." He added : "This guy probably has more raw speed than Beneteau if you can believe it. He's an absolute natural...he has a very high cruising speed." Weatherly is now a $9 chance for Saturday's Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, however connections would have to pay a late nomination fee to gain a start in the $1.5 million juvenile feature. Arrowfield Stud boss John Messara hinted that the Golden Slipper was the more likely option. "Paul told us right from the start that he was something very special," Messara told Racing.com. "We will let the owner make the decision...but the Slipper just gives us a more time to teach this fellow a little bit more." Bred by Arrowfield Stud in conjunction with the Chilean-based Sumaya Stables, Weatherly is out of the unraced Stravinsky mare Luna Bella, a full-sister to Gr2 Reisling Stakes winner Hips Don't Lie - herself the dam of Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper placegetter Lake Geneva.
