Cameron Praises Exciting Xtravagant
Jockey Matthew Cameron is confident that star Kiwi colt Xtravagant (Pentire-Axiom, by Zabeel) will measure up to Australia's best three-year-olds when contests the Gr1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on 5 March. Cameron has been aboard the exciting son of Pentire in his two top-flight victories to date, namely the Gr1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) in November and the Gr1 Waiakto Sprint (1400m) last weekend. On both occasions the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained 3YO has captured the imagination of the New Zealand racing industry in recording stunning 8-length victories, and he now has his sights on further Gr1 glory across the Tasman sea. "He was amazing. It was his best win yet," Cameron told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "I wasn't expecting him to win as well as he did. I know he's quick but I thought the older horses would push him a bit...he's a pretty special horse on the way up." When asked if Xtravagant was the best horse he had ever ridden Cameron didn't hesitate in saying: "He would be now for sure. He's an amazing horse to ride. He's definitely the standout at the moment." He added: "He has a blistering turn of foot and obviously the horses over there [Australia] are pretty special but horses like him might come along once every ten years...the world's his oyster." Xtravagant is scheduled to fly to Melbourne on the Wednesday before the Guineas giving him a couple of days to settle in before the big race.
