Winx Wins Gr2 Apollo Stakes

Monday, 15th February 2016

At Randwick in Sydney, Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) celebrated an elite Gr1 quinella when richly talented 4YO mare Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) scored by 1-length for trainer Chris Waller in the $250,000 Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) for 3YO+, over 5YO mare Solicit (Street Cry-Princesa, by Danehill) & 4YO gelding Hauraki (Reset-Youthful Presence, by Dehere). Winx confirmed her status as the best racehorse in Australia with this easy first-up win and in the process joined champions Sunline and Red Anchor as the only three horses to claim the Cox Plate-Apollo double. Saturday's win took her record to 10 wins (including the Gr1 Cox Plate, Gr1 Epsom Handicap, Gr1 Queensland Oaks, Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes, Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes & Gr2 Furious Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Australian Oaks & Gr1 Flight Stakes) from 16 starts for $3,781,925 earnings.  Winx, from the dual stakes-winning New Zealand mare Vegas Showgirl, was a $230,000 purchase by Magic Bloodstock at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud. "Today is probably the most nervous I've been in recent years," Waller told Sky Racing post-race. "There is a sense of importance about this horse...she is on the cusp of being a superstar and I feel it is important for racing to keep them winning." He added: "I would say that it will be a Group One that she will be running in next and hopefully she can get that too."
