Prelude Next Test For Calliope

Thursday, 4th February 2016

Godolphin trainer John O'Shea has confirmed that talented filly Calliope (Exceed and Excel-Melpomene, by Elusive Quality) will resume in the Gr2 Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies (1100m) at Caulfield on 13 February. The 2YO daughter of Exceed And Excel is undefeated after scoring on debut in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick in October. Earlier this week, O'Shea went on record as saying that Calliope was the pick of Godolphin's high-profile juvenile team, alongside fellow impressive debut winner Astern. "I really like the filly Calliope. She did a good job when she won in the spring and has really furnished up nicely," O'Shea told Radio Sport National yesterday. "She had a jump-out at Flemington last week and will go around in the Blue Diamond Prelude." O'Shea says that although he has a high opinion of Calliope's ability, she still has plenty to learn if she is to be competitive at the elite level. "Probably the only thing with her is that she is still doing a few things wrong but she does have a bunch of ability," he said. "It's just a question of whether the Blue Diamond might come too soon for her." He added: "She's physically strong enough and coping well enough, but to get around Caulfield in a high pressure race like the Blue Diamond there's no margin for error."
