Price Delighted With Tarzino

Tuesday, 2nd February 2016

Mick Price has given a glowing report on his New Zealand-bred Victoria Derby winner Tarzino, reports NZ Racing Desk. The leading Caulfield trainer was pleased with the son of Tavistock's performance at yesterday's Geelong trials, despite the 3YO finishing towards the rear in his 1200m heat under regular rider Craig Newitt. However, Price was less than impressed with the trails being switched from the grass to the synthetic track. "Disappointing we were not on the grass, but I have made my feelings known to the Geelong management," he said. "The main thing is I'm very happy with the horse and he's going terrific." He added: "He came out of the gates and Craig [Newitt] said he resented the kick back on this synthetic surface - it's the first time that big colt in blinkers would have seen that sort of thing....The horse is going fantastic." Price confirmed the Classic winner would resume on his home track in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) on Saturday week. "We're sticking to 1400m first-up in the Orr and then three weeks into the Australian Guineas and then the Rosehill Guineas and ATC Derby," he said. "If he has a good trip to Sydney and settles in, handles the reverse way of going then I think we'll see the best of him in the two Sydney runs, the Derby in particular." He added: "I think he's a great staying prospect. I'm mindful he had a spring preparation and he'll only have the four runs. I've had a few of these Derby type horses into the autumn and he's the toughest I've had. He's furnished into a stronger animal and I'm very happy with him."
