Sydney Cup Target For Almoonqith

Tuesday, 17th November 2015

Meanwhile, co-trainer Tom Dabernig says Saturday's impressive Sandown Cup winner Almoonqith will be sent for a spell before returning for a possible tilt at the Gr1 Sydney Cup in the autumn. The US-bred entire bounced back from a luckless run in the Melbourne Cup to score a decisive win in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) and Dabernig believes he will be an even better horse next season. "He might make a good Sydney Cup horse and we will definitely be looking at next year's Melbourne Cup," Dabernig told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "He's going to the paddock today [Monday]. These imports are normally better when they've had a full twelve months here in Australia so I think there is good improvement in him." He added: "Certainly a race like the Sydney Cup would be ideal and he could even kick off in Melbourne and run in the Australian Cup, but we'll be talking to Angus Gold [racing manager to owner Hamdan Al Maktoum] and we'll make a bit of a plan."
