Weir Eyeing Kiwi Cups

Friday, 13th November 2015

Darren Weir has won a Melbourne Cup and now he may have a runner in the Wellington and Auckland Cups, reports NZ Racing Desk. Victoria's current leading trainer has nominated last weekend's Gr3 Queen's Cup (2600m) winner Dandino (Dansili-Generous Diana, by Generous) for the Gr2 Wellington Cup (2400m) and the veteran galloper is also expected to be entered for the Gr1 Auckland Cup (3200m). He is far from certain to contest either race but his connections are keeping their options open and the set weight conditions of the $500,000 Gr1 Auckland Cup would be an attraction. The 9YO English import has won more than $2 million in stakes and would be the top weight at Trentham but at this stage would carry just 56kg in the Auckland Cup. "It's probably more unlikely than likely [that Dandino would race in New Zealand] but we are not ruling it out," Weir's racing manager, Jeremy Rogers, said. "Just thinking aloud, if he did come over, we could leave him there for a while and even look at the Auckland Cup [at Ellerslie on January 1] before going to Trentham," he said.
