Zerafa Disqualified For 3 Months

Tuesday, 22nd September 2015

Meanwhile, Racing NSW stewards yesterday disqualified racing media personality Brent Zerafa for a period of three months for engaging in conduct prejudicial to the image and/or interests of racing. The charge related to Zerafa's conduct as a TVN employee providing expert commentary from the mounting yard on Race 3 at the Royal Randwick meeting on Saturday, 17 January this year. Betting records showed Zerafa backed the eventual winner of the race, the Sam Kavanagh-trained Palazzo Pubblico, after receiving text communications from stable acquaintance John Camilleri. However, Palazzo Pubblico was not one of the two horses tipped by Zerafa in the pre-race commentary. In handing down sentence, stewards noted, inter alia: "Racing relies on the confidence of the betting public for its mere existence. Betting turnover is the lifeblood of the industry. Mr Zerafa's conduct occurred when acting as an employee of TVN, the racing industry's broadcaster of racing in New South Wales and Victoria at the time, and involved a Saturday afternoon broadcast of a Sydney metropolitan race meeting. In the view of the Stewards, that conduct would give rise to suspicion in the minds of a reasonable racing observer as to the integrity of the information that was being provided and accordingly would impact upon public confidence in the industry." Zerafa's disqualification begins immediately and will expire on 21st December 2015. Click here to view the full stewards report.
