Caulfield Cup Weights Released

Thursday, 3rd September 2015

The weights for the Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) were released yesterday with Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Snow Sky allocated equal top weight of 58kg. Protectionist will kick-off his Cups campaign in the Gr2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, while the connections of dual Gr2 winner Snow Sky have indicated they are favouring heading straight to the Melbourne Cup, where the son of Nayef would become the first runner in the race for Juddmonte Farms owner Khalid Abdullah. Other horses of interest included Japanese contenders Fame Game and Hokko Brave who were allotted 57kg and 55.5kg respectively, as well as Australian and New Zealand Derby winner Mongolian Khan who is the highest weighted 4YO with 55kg ahead of Kermadec who has 54kg. "Everyone talks about the poor record of Derby winners in the Caulfield Cup," Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said. "If you go through the last five Australian Derby winners that have run in the Caulfield Cup, Sky Heights has won it, with four of the last five running in the top three." Regarding the Japanese, Carpenter highlighted their outstanding record in the race. "The Japanese have an extraordinary record in the race. They've had five runners and three of them have finished in the top three," he said. "Fame Game is slightly higher rated than Hokko Brave. Fame Game has 57kg, Hokko Brave 55.5kg, which may look a hefty impost for a horse who has never won a Group race but he has raced very well the past two years in the Tenno Sho, Japan's feature staying race."
