Green Moon Retired

Monday, 11th May 2015

Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (Montjeu-Green Noon, by Green Tune) has run his last race after finishing last in Saturday's Gr1 Doomben Cup. Apart from his 2012 Melbourne Cup victory over Fiorente, Green Moon's only other Gr1 success came in the 2012 Turnbull Stakes, although he did finish runner-up in both the 2011 Caulfield Cup (behind Southern Speed) and last year's Australian Cup (behind old rival Fiorente). Owned by Lloyd and Nick Williams, the Irish-bred son of Montjeu won 7 of his 36 starts for almost $5.4 million prize money. Nick Williams praised the talented import when announcing his retirement on Twitter yesterday. "Not sure we have ever owned a horse that tried so hard, today he said enough," Williams tweeted.
