Monday, 31st March 2014

At Rosehill Gardens, Australia's Champion 2YO Colt of 2007-2008 and Widden Stud sire Sebring (More Than Ready-Purespeed, by Flying Spur) sired his second Gr1 winner when 3YO colt Criterion (Sebring-Mica's Pride, by Bite the Bullet) scored by 3.5-lengths for trainer David Payne in the $500,000 Gr1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) for 3YOs, over 3YO geldings Thunder Fantasy (Lucky Owners-Pink Pier, by Galileo) & Teronado (Testa Rossa-Nassi Doll, by Nassipour). Criterion took his record to 4 wins (including the G2 Todman Stakes & Listed Black Opal Stakes) and 4 placings (including the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes & Gr1 Australian Guineas) from 15 starts for $1,056,200 earnings. Foaled in New Zealand, Criterion is a homebred for Sir Owen Glenn's Go Bloodstock and is a half-brother to Gr2 QTC Cup winner Varenna Miss and Listed James HB Carr Stakes winner Silently from Gr3 winning mare Mica's Pride. Trainer David Payne commented: "He's only just maturing now," reports breednet.com.au. "You have to leave him alone in the run and not bustle him. He'll be winning the Derby hopefully. From day one we always thought he would be winning at 2000 metres plus." The $2 million Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) will be run at Royal Randwick on 12 April.
