Fontelina May Back Up In Ryder

Tuesday, 25th March 2014

Anthony Cummings is considering backing up Fontelina (Testa Rossa-Decipher, by Timber Country) in Saturday's Gr1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill, reports racingnetwork.com. Fontelina was a luckless second behind Spirit Of Boom in Friday night's Gr1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley, with Cummings saying he was impressed with the horse's recovery from the race. "There is potential for it (to run) certainly. I haven't sat down yet and had a look at the fields," Cummings said. "But he makes it possible by the way that he has come out of that race." Fontelina was blocked for a run at a vital stage in the straight, before diving through along the rails to lose by a short head. "It was no one's fault, it just did not happen," Cummings said. The Randwick trainer said stepping up to the 1500m of the Ryder would be an easier assignment for Fontelina than the 1200m of the VRC Sprint Classic. He said an alternative plan was to wait three weeks for the TJ Smith Stakes.
