Messene Wins Gr2 Ajax Stakes

Monday, 24th March 2014

At Rosehill Gardens, former Australian Champion Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) added group success when 5YO gelding Messene (Lonhro-Belle Giselle, by Redoute's Choice) scored by 2.8-lengths for trainers Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes in the $175,000 Gr2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) for 3YO+, over 4YO French-bred gelding Weary (Astronomer Royal-America Nova, by Verglas) and fellow 5YO gelding Malavio (Snitzel-Win Here Win There, by Dehere). No horse in the country exhibits as much potential as Messene, who continues to improve with every start. His imposing record now reads 9 wins (including the Listed National Sprint Handicap in Canberra) and 2 placings from just 12 starts for $396,823 earnings. Messene is a homebred for the Cloros family and is the first live foal of the Redoute's Choice mare Belle Giselle. Belle Giselle's dam Mam'Selle Giselle (Kenmare-Lady Giselle, Nureyev) is a sister to Gr1 Australian Guineas winner Baryshnikov and a half-sister to Gr1 Australian Guineas winner and champion stallion Zabeel. Interestingly, this means that Messene carries a 3f x 4m cross of influential broodmare Lady Giselle. This is also the family of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winning mare Detroit and her sire son Carnegie, who emulated his mother by landing the 1995 edition of the Arc.
