Glamorous Beckham Debuts In Style
Blue-blooded colt Beckham (Pins-Glamour Puss, by Tale of the Cat) raced up to his pedigree and good looks with a fetching debut win on his home track at Matamata yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. Raced by his breeders Waikato Stud, the 3YO of Pins and dual Gr1-wining mare Glamour Puss impressed when winning by 1.5-lengths in the Prima Park Bloodstock 1200 (1200m) maiden handicap. "He's a real blueblood - he's got it all there," said jockey Vinnie Colgan. "He stepped out of the gates well and was very tractable and he gave me a really nice feel in the last 200 metres." Beckham is prepared by Peter and Jacob McKay and the colt's win came off the back of a trial placing. "We've held him in high regard for a long time," Jacob McKay said. "He's done it very nicely and he'll improve. In the back of our minds we have always had big targets for him, but we wanted to see him do it on the track first." He added, "We will have a talk to Mark and Garry Chittick (Waikato Stud principals) and see where we head next. There is always extra pressure with a horse like this and I know that Garry has always had an extra bit of time for the horse, so it's nice to win for them today." Trained by Victorian trainer Danny O'Brien, Glamour Puss won 9 of her 26 starts, including the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap and Gr1 Salinger Stakes (now known as the VRC Sprint Classic).
