Burj Next For Variety Club

Thursday, 6th March 2014

Champion South African galloper Variety Club (Var-La Massine, by Secret Prospector) will take the easier option and run in the Gr3 Burj Nahaar (1600m) rather than the Gr1 Jebel Hatta (1800m) at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday, reports goldcircle.co.za. Dubbed Super Saturday, the Dubai meeting is traditionally used as a trial for horses aimed at the feature events on World Cup night (29 March), but connections of the dual South African Horse of the Year have already decided to give the world's richest race a miss. "The Burj Nahaar is better distance-suited for Variety Club and it will give us a good indication as to whether we go for the Gr2 Godolphin Mile or the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free over 1800m," explained Derek Brugman, racing manager for Markus Jooste. "But the World Cup itself is definitely not on the cards." Variety Club showcased his enormous class when scoring an impressive win in the Gr3 Firebreak Stakes at Meydan on 13 February, while also putting an end to doubts about his ability to handle Meydan's synthetic tapeta surface.
