Carey Aims High With Gondokoro

Thursday, 23rd January 2014

Queensland Oaks heroine Gondokoro (Zabeel-Kisumu, by Carnegie) will open her autumn campaign in the Listed John Dillion Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday, reports horseracing.com.au. Trainer Pat Carey intentionally gave Gondokoro an extended break following her fifth place finish behind Hawkspur in the Gr1 Queensland Derby in June, and says he is happy with the physical improvement she has shown. "She is coming along quite nice and I am quite happy with her progress," Carey said. "She is a little bit bigger and stronger and she was given a bit of time after the Queensland campaign to grow out and mature. She has certainly done that." The 4YO Zabeel mare was amongst the nominations for the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on 8 March, but Carey said she was not sure thing to line up in the million dollar feature. "There are plenty of options for her as she gets out over ground," Carey said. "She was nominated for the Australian Cup, but it could be something like the BMW or one of those other Sydney races. We will just keep monitoring her as we go, but she is certainly open to improve as a four-year-old staying mare." By recently retired champion New Zealand sire Zabeel, Gondokoro is a full-sister to Gr1 Australian Derby winner Zabeelionaire, from the Gr2-placed Carnegie mare Kisumu.
