Ryan Takes Covers Off Rubick

Tuesday, 21st January 2014

Cleverly-named boom colt Rubick (Encosta de Lago-Sliding Cube, by Rock of Gibraltar) will make his eagerly awaited debut in the 2YO Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday, reports horseracing.com.au. The Gerald Ryan-trained juvenile has been installed as the $7 second favourite for the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on 22 February, after winning a 900m Rosehill barrier trial by 7.25-lengths in January. "You like to see them do it on raceday and see them do it once or twice before you really go over the top...but on what he's shown so far he's a nice horse," Ryan said. "He's got a great attitude, a great demeanour, he eats his feed, he works good, he's got a great nature and he shows heaps at home." Ryan has held the blue-blooded colt in high regard for quite some time, and rates him alongside former stable star Snitzel. "I said to the people who are in the horse that I think he is the best I've trained since Snitzel," Ryan said. "From the first time I saw him on the farm at Vinery Stud I loved him. I've got some nice two-year-olds but none are like him. He is a very well bred horse and can certainly gallop." Snitzel won 7 of his 15 career starts, including the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate, before retiring to Arrowfield Stud where he has established himself as one of the leading sires in the country (Snitzel is currently leading the Australian Sires' Premiership with nearly $1 million more in progeny earnings than Fastnet Rock). The beautifully bred Rubick is by Encosta de Lago from Gr3 winner Sliding Cube, a three-quarter sister to champion sire Redoute's Choice, and was purchased by David Raphael for $460,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Vinery Stud.
