Bernardini Adds US Gr2

Tuesday, 21st January 2014

At Santa Anita in the US, triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & US Eclipse Award-winning stallion Bernardini (A.P. Indy-Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American) added a group success when 4YO mare Spellbound (Bernardini-Layreebelle, by Tale of the Cat) scored by a neck for trainer Richard Mandella in the US$200,000 Gr2 La Canada Stakes (8.5 furlongs) for 4YO mares, over fellow 4YO mares Let Faith Arise (Kafwain-Babe Hall, by El Corredor) & Ondine (Medaglia d'Oro-Arrow in Flight, by Forest Wildcat). Spellbound stormed home from near last to claim her maiden Gr1 victory and boost her record to 3 wins from 8 starts for US$208,750 earnings. "She's always been a talented filly, but was a little backwards early in her first races, rough in the gate, just not doing things right," Mandella told bloodhorse.com. "Just little by little, she's come around. She trained really well for this race, an allowance race didn't go, so we went here."
