Filly Casts Spell Over Rivals

Monday, 13th January 2014

Coming off a game third to stable-mate Costa Viva in the Gr1 New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (1600m), top filly Spellbinder (O'Reilly-Scenic Sprint, by Scenic) stamped her class with an impressive win in the Pegasus Equine Rating 75 (1200) at Ellerslie on Saturday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The 3YO daughter of O'Reilly returned to the scene of her 6.5-length win in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) in September to record a 1.5-length win over 4YO Falkirk mare La Valeta and fellow filly Designated Driver. Te Akau trainer Jason Bridgman has always held Spellbinder in high regard and the filly vindicated his faith off the back of a limited preparation for the race. "I thought she would be vulnerable without the benefit of a trial, or even an exhibition gallop as she has only really had one serious piece of work since the Guineas," he said. "Only good horses can do that sort of thing and hopefully if she pulls up well we can come back here in a fortnight for the Karaka Mile." The Listed Karaka 3YO Mile (1600m) is one of the feature events on Karaka Million night at Ellerslie on Sunday the 26th of January.  Although he has plans in mind for the filly following that race, Bridgman will be guided by her next performance before committing to the race. "I just don't know how many runs on fast ground she will take, so we'll just have to assess it after her next run," before adding that the Brisbane winter carnival is also a possibility. "I'm not adverse to a freshen-up with her again and maybe waiting until winter and possibly taking her to Brisbane".
