British Clubs To Hold Students' Day
In the UK, British Racing's chief executive Rod Street has announced a National Student Day to be held on October 26, with six racecourses taking part in what will aim to be the country's biggest ever student attendance in a single day, reports turftrax.com. Street told the annual meeting of the Racehorse Owners Association that the aim was to build on the success of the 'kids come free' policy of most racecourses. Street said, "Fast forward a few years and that kid we've entertained joins one of the many university racing clubs we've set up around the country and they continue to come racing, perhaps starting to enjoy the social aspect of race-going as a group. Four of the UK's best attended sports events are racing ones. We've averaged racecourse attendances of 5.9 million over the last few years. We're second only to football in attendance and dedicated television hours." Betting on racing in the UK accounts for some £100 million in Government tax income.
