And Down The Beach They Come

Wednesday, 26th June 2013

Wednesday odd-spot: In the US, the New Jersey State Assembly voted on Monday 76-0 in favour of a bill that will allow horse racing on the Atlantic City beach in October, reports northjersey.com. The bill (A-4149) would authorize the New Jersey Racing Commission to grant a special permit – to permit holders in good standing authorised to conduct running races – to hold or conduct a special running race meeting on the beach. Known as the Palio di Atlantic City (American Palio Celebration), the event will be held on October 11 and 13 and is an American version of the Italian Palio, a 700 year old tradition where horses race around the town square of Siena. American Palio "will have a total of 50 horses competing in a series of elimination races that will narrow the field to the 10 runners who will race for the American Palio Championship." State Assemblyman John Burzichelli explained: "This will attract horse fans, sports fans, families and those simply looking to see a unique event on the beach in the autumn."
