English Trainer Waits For BHA Phone Call
UK trainer Gerard Butler, who has runners engaged this weekend at Newmarket & Beverley, is expecting a phone call shortly from the British Horseracing Authority which appears set to charge him with steroid use, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. In April, Butler admitted to using the product Sungate "which contains the banned steroid stanozolol and is not authorised for veterinary use in the UK, to treat horses with soundness issues." Should Butler be charged, it will be against the backdrop of the recent 8-year banning of former Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni for administering steroids to horses under his care. Butler, who is hoping the case doesn't turn into a 'public execution' as a result, commented: "I have no option but to fear for the worst and I'll just have to pick up the pieces. If it's to be a ban it will be an absolute disaster for both myself and my family but I won't walk away from racing in the long term."
