Quarantine Delays Halt Ortensia Singapore Trip

Wednesday, 21st April 2010

Quarantine restrictions "have forced trainer Tony Noonan to abandon a trip to Singapore for star mare Ortensia, who will instead head to Brisbane" reported The Daily Telegraph. Following her sensational last-to-first victory in last Saturday's Gr1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Royal Randwick in Sydney, Noonan was keen to send 4YO mare Ortensia (Testa Rossa-Aerate's Pick, by Picnicker) on her 1st overseas trip overseas to Singapore's Gr1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) at Kranji on May 16 "but a 3-week stay in quarantine swayed him against making the trip". Noonan confirmed: "Three weeks is a long time in quarantine & we wanted to bring her home for the Gr1 Stradbroke (1400m at Eagle Farm on June 12) & Gr1 Winter Stakes (1400m at Eagle Farm on June 26). Not being able to get her back quick enough tipped the scales." Ortensia will now begin her Queensland campaign in the Gr1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 15. However Noonan also confirmed he "still plans to send Ortensia to race at Royal Ascot in England next year" noting: "The Gr1 Golden Jubilee is the logical race, but there's also a few other races including a fillies & mares race which would suit her." And Noonan emphasised Ortensia "is still a long way from reaching her full potential" adding: "She's still only lightly-raced. This season & next year will be her 2 best years." Ortensia (a $50,000 yearling at the 2007 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne) currently boasts 9 wins (also including 2009's Gr2 Winterbottom Stakes over 1200m at Ascot, Gr2 QTC Cup over 1300m at Eagle Farm, Listed Glenlogan Park Stakes over 1350m at Doomben & Listed P.J.Bell Handicap over 1200m at Randwick, plus 2008's Gr3 Thousand Guineas Prelude over 1400m at Caulfield) & 5 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m at Eagle Farm, Listed Herald-Sun Stakes over 1400m at Flemington & Listed James Carr Stakes over 1400m at Randwick, plus 2008's Gr3 TBV/Eliza Park Champagne Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley) from 17 starts for $1,133,817 earnings.
