US Sire Forest Wildcat Dies After Surgery
Kentucky's Brookdale Farm-based stallion Forest Wildcat (sire of 55 stakes-winners & 16 graded stakes-winners) died aged 17 "from unknown causes after emergency surgery at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington", reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Purchased for US$325,000 as a 2YO, Forest Wildcat (Storm Cat-Victoria Beauty, by Bold Native) won 9 of 20 starts (including the Gr3 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap in which he equaled the Pimlico track record & Gr3 Finger Lakes Breeders' Cup Handicap) & earned US$480,000 prize-money. Forest Wildcat stood at Brookdale Farm since his retirement in 1997 (initially for US$10,000 & this year for US$35,000); he sired 2 Gr1-winners in his 1st-crop with Forest Secrets (Gr1 Acorn Stakes) & D'Wildcat (Gr1 Frank De Francis Memorial Dash). Subsequent stars included: Var (2004 English high-weight sprinter who won France's Gr1 Prix de l'Abbaye); D'Wildcat Speed (who won all 12 of this 3YO season starts in 2003 & earned Horse-Of-The-Year honors in Puerto Rico, as well as later adding victory in the US Gr2 Rampart Handicap); Gr1-winners Forest Secrets, D'wildcat & Wildcat Heir; plus multiple Gr2-winner Snow Dance. Forest Wildcat currently ranks 3rd in stakes-winners this year with 12 (including the Gr2 Coolmore Lexington Stakes winner Behindatthebar) & 19th in progeny earnings at US$4,092,568.
