Perth Cup Reduced To 2400m

Wednesday, 14th May 2008

The West Australian Turf Club announced the 2009 Gr2 Perth Cup (on January 1) will be run over 2400m, rather then its traditional 3200m (the same distance as Australia's most famous race, the Gr1 Melbourne Cup). The decision "signals the end of 120 years of history for WA's premier staying event, first run over 2 miles in 1887," reported The Australian. The step "follows in the hoofprints of the Queensland Turf Club's move in 2007 to reduce the Brisbane Cup from 3200m to 2400m." The newspaper commented: "Two mile races (3200m) are a dying event if the latest down-sizing of a major cup is anything to go by."
