Tuesday, 28th March 2006

In the US, former NZ Haunui Stud shuttler Almutawakel (Machiavellian-Elfaslah, by Green Desert) added a major US group success when Martin Schwartz's 4YO Irish-bred mare Silver Cup (Almutawakel-Ribblesdale, by Northern Park) made it 3 successive Gr2 triumphs with a half-length victory in the US$150,000 Santa Ana Handicap (9 furlongs on turf) for mares 4YO & up at Santa Anita Park, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Silver Cup (ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer Patrick Biancone) defeated French-bred Argentina (Sadler's Wells-Airline, by Woodman) & Beautyandthebeast (Machiavellian-Nicola Bella, by Sadler's Wells). Silver Cup became the 1st racemare "to sweep the Gr2 San Gorgonio Handicap (over 9 furlongs in January), Gr2 Buena Vista Handicap (over 8 furlongs in February) & Gr2 Santa Ana Handicap". Last season she won 4 races in a row in Italy (including the Gr2 Italian 1000 Guineas) before shipping to the US for the Gr1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park (where she ran 7th). Overall Silver Cup now has 8 wins from 13 career starts for US$559,485 earnings.
