Takeover Target Wins Gr1 Newmarket Handicap
The people's champ & his taxi-driver-trainer are off to Royal Ascot in June after bargain-buy of the decade 6YO gelding Takeover Target (Celtic Swing-Shady Stream, by Archregent) continued his sizzling summer sprint form & made it 4 victories & a Gr1-placing from his last 5 starts with a spine-tingling victory in the $1 million Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington. Despite carrying top-weight & starting from outside barrier 12, Takeover Target (ridden by Jay Ford for trainer Joe Janiak) won by a half-length from last start Gr1 Oakleigh Plate-winning 3YO colt Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) with a further long-head to last season's Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning fellow 3YO colt Stratum (Redoute's Choice-Bourgeois, by Luskin Star). Takeover Target (a $1,250 jackpot at the 2003 Inglis Winter Thoroughbred Sale) took his record to 11 wins (also including the Gr1 Salinger Stakes in October, a course record 5.5-lengths victory in the Gr3 Summer Stakes over 1200m at Doomben in December & the Gr1 Lightning Stakes over 1000m at Flemington on February 4) & 3 placings (including a last start 3rd on a heavy track in the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate over 1100m at Caulfield on February 25) in 18 starts for $1,871,100 earnings. Meanwhile his sire Celtic Swing (Damister-Celtic Ring, by Welsh Pageant) who shuttled to Australia's Collingrove Stud for 4 seasons, is based at the Irish National Stud.
