Roman Arch Wins Gr1 Australian Cup

Monday, 13th March 2006

Ill-fated former Larneuk Stud shuttler Archway (Thatching-Rose Of Jericho, by Alleged) added a shock Gr1 success when long-shot 7YO gelding Roman Arch (Archway-Celestial Option, by Clear Choice) caused a major upset by diving between rivals in the final strides to grab victory in a 3-way photo-finish to the $1 million weight-for-age Gr1 Darley Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington. Roman Arch (ridden by Craig Newitt for trainer Robbie Laing) won by a head from 4YO mare Candy Vale (Bubble Gum Fellow-Borracha, by Whiskey Road) with a further short-head to 5YO gelding Our Smoking Joe (Encosta De Lago-Dalzing, by Blazing Sword). Roman Arch now has 17 wins (including the Gr1 Toorak Handicap & last November's Gr2 Sandown Classic) & 8 placings in 73 starts for $1,928,180 earnings.
