Boom Colt Last On Debut

Thursday, 28th July 2005

In Melbourne yesterday, all eyes were on the long-awaited debut by regally-bred 2YO colt Hachiman (Fusaichi Pegasus-Danelagh, by Danehill) over 1200m at Flemington. Hachiman is reportedly named after "the Shinto god of war & divine protector of the Japanese people", but the colt (whose dam Danelagh won the 1998 Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes & is himself a half-brother to both reigning Gr1 AJC Oaks winner Dizelle & Gr1 Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Vengeance Of Rain) finished an inglorious last in a field of 6 juveniles for owner Darley Australia Syndicate & trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith. Ironically the race was won by arch-rival Vinery Stud's fellow colt Ready To Mombo (More Than Ready-Miss Mombo Queen, by Kingmambo) which had been passed-in as a yearling for $40,000 at the 2004 Magic Millions Premier Sale on the Gold Coast.
