NSW Stewards Prepare New System

Friday, 22nd July 2005

NSW stewards "are looking at rewarding those jockeys with good records when it comes to handing down suspensions," reported The Daily Telegraph. Chief steward Ray Murrihy confirmed fellow steward Marc Van Gestel is "in the process of finalising a discussion paper which would revamp the current system". Murrihy noted riders such as Grant Buckley (who has not been suspended in more than 1,400 rides) would be eligible for a "discount the next time he fell foul of the law"; Murrihy added the new laws "promoted safe riding" & were "more flexible than the current laws". He said the new system would be "pitched to the Jockeys' Association in coming months, before being put to the Racing NSW board".
